Housing size counts considerably more than almost anything else. A parrot should be able to fully extend its wings clear of the bars. Different perch diameters and materials helps avoid joint issues. Toys and foraging opportunities is essential: boredom drives destructive behaviour.

Where you buy matters as much as the species itself. Hand-raised birds from an experienced breeder settle much more readily to companion life. Request disease testing and the conditions birds are kept in. Legal documentation is required with regulated species.

Nutrition remains the single biggest cause of illness in companion birds. An all-seed diet are deficient in adequate vitamin A and calcium. A balanced diet includes a quality pellet base plus vegetables and some fruit. A number of common foods are dangerous, such as avocado, chocolate and caffeine.

Exotic parrots represent a long-term commitment, and several species surviving well beyond forty years. Different species differ dramatically across noise, space needs and temperament. Larger Pickin Parrots require significant enrichment, while smaller birds suit limited space.
